Causes of Hair Loss in Men
August 7, 2009

The most common case of hair loss is male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia. However, there are other reasons which are not so serious and go away completely after some time or with certain treatment.
The most common reasons for hair loss in men are:
- Stress. Both physical and psychological stress influence hair growth. Such things are surgeries, chemotherapy, car accident, and loss of family member or friend affect the body seriously and can lead to temporary hair loss. The results of it will be mostly noticed three or four months after the event. The hair usually restores without treatment in six to twelve months.
- Tight hair styles like corn rows or pony tails damage hair follicles and lead to hair loss. It is called traction alopecia. If the person wants to have good healthy hair, he is strictly advised to give up tight hair styles, because constant damage to follicles might cause their complete destruction and permanent hair loss.
- Low level of important nutrients such as iron, zinc, iodine, silica, vitamins A, E, B complex and C. A doctor consultation will help to find out which vitamins or minerals are deficient and advise the best solution to the problem.
- Alopecia areata. About 1% population suffers this type of hair loss. Mostly children are affected, but it can happen to men and women at any age. Alopecia areata has not been fully studied, so the reasons for it remain unknown. However, some specialists claim that immune system problems are most likely to be the primary reason. This case of hair loss is unpredictable and quick: sometimes bald patches appear within one night. There is no cure for the disease, but the good thing is, after it reaches certain point alopecia areata goes away by itself, hair restores and grows back in the bald patches.
Although there are different reasons for hair loss, 95% of men come across male pattern baldness. Genetics is the root of the problem. If the man’s father had any degree of the hair loss, then he himself is most likely to experience it too.
Although hair loss is not threatening for life, some men feel really stressed about it. They think that hair loss is a sign of aging and try to hide it, wanting to look younger. The actual problem is not age, but testosterone, and its derivative dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in particular. Hair follicles are very sensitive to it. When there is enough DHT in the body, the follicles start shrinking and stop producing healthy hair.
The important thing to know that there is no reason to panic. If male pattern baldness bothers the man too much, he can try different treatments: FDA and Americal Hair Loss Association recommend starting with Propecia pills. If they do not work, there is a topical solution, Rogaine, which is effective on some people’s hair. And finally, there is surgical hair restoration, if other means do not have any effect. For those who try to stay away from doctors there is a number of natural hair loss cures which are very effective in many cases.
