Hair Loss Treatment for Women
September 13, 2009

Women are more sensitive to hair loss than men probably because it occurs more rarely than in men. You can hardly come across a bald woman on a street while every fifth man there will have some degree of male pattern hair loss. Scientists are ready to help women with different kinds of treatments, but not all of them are effective.
Unfortunately, the most effective hair loss cure Propecia is very good for men, but it is strictly recommended for male pattern baldness only. Women are advised to stay away from the drug, especially if the woman has a chance to become pregnant. Some specialists say, post-menopausal women can use the pill safely, but even then the patient is prescribed some contraceptive medication along with Propecia.
So, out of all the treatments invented and advertised, there is only one which has been clinically proven to work on women if they want to stop hair loss and restore their hair. This FDA approved treatment is called Minoxidil. It is effective for both men and women, but different concentrations of it should be used by the representatives of the two sexes: men use 5% solution, while women need only 2%.
Minoxidil was first discovered as a high blood pressure treatment. During the studies the participants have noticed that their hair stopped falling out and in some cases new hair started growing. Being used as a pill it provoked hair growth in unexpected areas like cheeks or backs of people’s hands. This is why the scientists came up with the idea of a topical solution. Having low concentration of the actual medicine, the treatment does not cause any internal side effects.
The studies on women between 18 and 45 years old have shown that 19% of them experienced moderate hair growth after using Minoxidil for 8 months (19% moderate and 40% minimal hair growth).
The FDA has not approved 5% solution for women, but many dermatologists use it anyway if the women which have androgenic alopecia use the Minoxidil under their supervision. Some small tests have shown that the 5% treatment is more effective on women, but the full effect of the medication has not been studied.
The best results from any hair loss treatment can be achieved if the use of medications starts as soon as the first signs of hair loss are noticed. Only then the high amount of hair follicles can be saved and even minor hair re-growth will do a great job.
If Minoxidil has not shown any effect, the American Hair Loss Association offers a few more treatments. They are used by some doctors to treat hair loss in women. All of them are official drugs, approved by FDA for other qualities, but not for hair loss treatment. They are Aldactone/Spironolactone, Tagamet/Climetidine, Cyproterone Acetate, Estrogen/Progesterone, Nizoral/Ketoconazole, and Cyproterone Acetate with Ethinyloestradiol. All of them affect female hair loss to some degree, but the results vary from person to person.
